What we look at in leisure centres and pools
A pool hall is a moisture problem with a temperature attached. Evaporation from the water surface loads the air continuously, and if that moisture is not removed it condenses in the building fabric, corrodes fixings and damages the structure long before anyone complains about comfort. Dehumidification capacity, air distribution across the water surface and protection of the fabric drive the design.
Air and water temperatures have to be considered together. Air kept slightly above water temperature reduces evaporation and improves comfort for wet bathers, while the wrong relationship increases both the moisture load and the running cost. Ventilation rates then follow from occupancy and from the chemistry in the hall, not from a generic figure.
Gyms and sports halls are a different load in the same building. High, variable occupancy with people generating a lot of heat, tall volumes that stratify, and a real need for fresh air rather than just cooling. Corrosion-aware equipment selection matters throughout, and we plan maintenance access knowing the environment is harsher on plant than an office ever is.
